This is a transcript of five oral history interviews with William Hopkins. In the interviews Hopkins discussed his personal background; his entry into government service; his career as Executive Clerk in the White House; the organization and duties of the permanent White House staff, including the staffs of the Mail Room, the Telegraph Office, the Correspondence Section, the Switchboard, the Records Office, Central Filing, the Accounts, Purchases and Personnel Section, and the Messenger and Miscellaneous Service Units; White House personnel issues; storage of White House files; treatment of White House mail; presidential transitions; and Mrs. Hopkins's work for Dwight D. Eisenhower in the War Department. Phillip Elias Areeda (January 28, 1930 – December 24, 1995) was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was of Lebanese ancestry. Areeda was an authority in antitrust law, and was often called upon to lend his expertise to academics and judiciaries. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1954 after graduating from Harvard University. After law school, Areeda served in the U.S. Air Force for two years. William J. Hopkins (b. May 13, 1910, Netawaka, Kan.-d. July 29, 2004, Gainesville, Fla.) was an executive assistant and clerk to the President of the United States who served under seven presidents, from Herbert Hoover to Richard Nixon. During the Johnson Presidency, he served as Executive Clerk, White House Office, from 1963 thru July 1966, when his title changed to Executive Assistant, White House Office.
